hi!
This is the longest I have gone without checking my flist in the past 5ish years of using LJ. I've been traveling for most of the past month and just decided not to keep checking LJ. So, if anything major has happened, let me know here!

I've missed a ton of fun Doctor Who stuff, but I think I'm mostly caught up now. :-)

After my bold words last night, I ran across some technical issues that kept me from starting my thesis. (All the more reason for me to hurry up and install LINUX on the new laptop!) Anyway, rest assured, I started it today! I have written one paragraph, and edited the easy stuff, like my name and my advisor's name, etc. :-)

I felt productive today, but then I realized it was because I was doing things other people were supposed to have done for me.

1.) I signed up for summer payroll deduction ages ago. The way my school does it, we get paid extra but that money is supposed to cover our fees (we get a tuition waver). (Side note: go to grad school in the sciences - it's free! (ok there are some caveats)) So we sign up to get the money automatically deducted from our paychecks. So I did this like I was supposed to but our secretary canceled my request saying that I would get my fees paid out of some other grant this year. Then she said that was wrong and that she would reinstate my payroll deduction. So then yesterday I get an email saying I have an outstanding balance and my registrations would be put on hold. *sigh* I panicked a little thinking that I really did owe something, but when I called the bursar's office it turns out I wasn't signed up for payroll deduction. And of course it was too late for the deduction to take place for this month so I have to issue a check. I signed up for it again.

2.) I turned in a library book 2 months ago. A few days ago I get a reminder that it's going to be due soon (if that seems long, grad students can check out books for a year). I was 90% sure I'd turned it back in, but had a look around my (small) apartment and my office and didn't find it. So I went to the library myself, located it in the stacks, brought it to the front desk and told them what had happened. They checked it in for my while I stood there, so now I know I'm good. :-) I guess I could have just called them, but I needed to go to the library anyway.

Ok, I've put it off long enough. Tonight I will break the seal on my thesis LaTEX template and will write something down!!!

I've had quite the flying experience lately! My flight back from Colorado was plagued with delays and I ended up having to stay overnight (on United's dime) in Chicago. The hotel just happened to be next door (quite literally) to the arena where the Grateful Dead had played that night, so my hotel was full of dead heads in various stages of intoxication. Had I not been so very grumpy, I might have found it funny. Then I went to Huntsville for Mother's Day weekend and on my flight to Memphis from HSV on my way home, the landing gear malfunctioned and we had to make an emergency landing back in HSV!! The landing went normally, but they called it an emergency landing because of the possibility of the landing gear collapsing or something. I had a terrible experience getting my flight rescheduled, but that's over now. Someone had lent me their copies of the Sookie Stackhouse books (the HBO show True Blood is based on these) and I ran through them during all my traveling troubles and delays. They are not high literature, but made for some brain candy and fast reads. They are fairly creative though!

I also read In the Woods while in HSV and enjoyed it. It's a very compelling mystery.

I'm glad to be settled for a few weeks before my next trip. I will be in South Dakota June 1-5 for a meeting. We are staying in Deadwood (!) and will be taking a trip to see Mount Rushmore.

Does anyone have any book recommendations? I read just about anything (no zombies) but am sort of between books at the moment.

30 April 2009 @ 11:44 am
I've had so much going on! I feel the need to update (probably because I have a lot of work to do) so I will do it in bullet points.

Stuff that's been on my mind:
  • The Swine Flu - Sometimes I wish I'd never read Stephen King's The Stand. Because I'm traveling this weekend, I am a little paranoid about catching it. A bunch of us are traveling to a conference in Denver, so our lab is considering giving us HEPA masks to wear on the plane. *sigh* I really hate wearing them! We have to wear them when we move large quantities of lead bricks as well, and they bug me, but I guess it's better than getting sick.

  • Colorado! - Yay I'm going to Denver tomorrow! It's my first time in Colorado and I'm excited to see the mountains. I'm nervous about my results that I have to present on Saturday, but at least my talk is on the first day of the conference so I can enjoy the rest of it. Also, I think my advisor will actually be there for my talk, which is a first! I've given maybe 5 talks at conferences which he's attended, and I think that he's accidentally missed all of them for some reason or another.

  • Connecticut - I was in CT last weekend to visit my brother, sister-in-law, and nephew. I had a great time! There are so many cute little towns up there, and being near the ocean was nice. My nephew is 2 and called me Didi the entire time I was there. No one told him to call me that, but it's the name of his imaginary friend. So maybe I was his imaginary friend all along? And now everyone can see me? Did I exist before that? ;-)

  • New Laptop - The lab bought me a laptop! It's so shiny and pretty. I really like it even though I'm having a hard time quitting my last one. I am slowly transferring the files that I need over. I have to give it back when I leave anyway, so no need to get too attached. I'm so glad I got the XP downgrade though. I was playing around with Vista in CT and it was too annoying. A couple of things I miss in my old laptop are the home and end keys. I use them all the time! There is one on the new one, of course but you have to use the FCN button to access them, and I'm not used to that yet.

  • Twilight - Ok, I broke down and listened to the Twilight audiobooks after about 5 trusted people told me they liked them. They were ok. I'm horrified to find that I do kinda like vampire stories now. (The Historian started that.) I will not be swayed on zombies though. Worst genre ever. So the writing in Twilight is just awful. Maybe if I had read it instead of listened it wouldn't have been so evident. She really overuses adverbs and there must be a million chuckles and glares in the entire series. Also, the obsessive relationship is a bit much. I thought the writing style got better as the books went on (keeping in mind this is a young adult genre) but it was still pretty bad. However, I was interested in the story and wanted to find out what happened. I don't know how to explain this. It was a good way to pass the traveling time though.

All right. Back to writing my talk.

I am having a technological meltdown! I think the tech-meltdown field is in the immediate vicinity of my apartment and my own self. Keep your iPhones and gadgetry far from me!

About 3 weeks ago, the connection between my laptop screen and the rest of the laptop began behaving badly. It's very particular about the angle at which the screen rests. I've got it stabilized for now, but it's rendered my laptop into a desktop.
in which I complain...a lot )
So what is the deal with "going green" and disposable technology?? The first thing anyone says to me when I mentioned my laptop screen failure was "time to get a new laptop"! I only used my phone for 9 months! What is the deal here? Aren't the components of technology some of the most "non-green" materials to obtain and produce?

Sorry, I'm just irritable because I had to go to Verizon.

I'm back from the Netherlands! I have to say, it's a marvelous country. I was in Groningen in the north, and everyone is so nice there. And tall. Very tall. Anyway, more later with pictures! Just thought I'd say hi!

I've been watching Long Way Round, a travel documentary from 2004-ish which follows Ewan McGregor (Star Wars, Moulin Rouge, etc) and his friend Charlie Boorman on a motorcycle trip where they try to ride from London to New York City going the "long way". It's really great! Besides seeing all the interesting sights and the people they meet, they sometimes are just really hilarious. Ewan once comments that he just that night had his first Star Wars dream where he was playing Obiwan Kenobi naked. Another time, some people or cops come up to see what they are doing, and he says, "These are not the bikes you're looking for" in Star Wars fashion. It was great.

There's another one they did called Long Way Down which is a similar trip from Scotland to Cape Town, South Africa.

During my Wednesday night racquetball game, I re-sprained my left ankle. It's not a bad sprain, and already feels pretty good today. I went to a physical therapist, as recommended by the student health center, and she gave me some strengthening exercises to do. She also asked me to come back in two weeks so that she can see if there is something going on with my entire left leg. She said since my left knee is the knee in which I have pain (runner's knee, etc) and I keep hurting my left ankle, there might be some hip weakness. I'm interested to see what she finds out.

I finally finished listening to World Without End by Ken Follett today. It is 45 hours long! I started it on my drive from Huntsville, AL back to Durham before the new year, and have been listening in chunks since then. It was a good audiobook as it doesn't require too much concentration.

Haven't done one of these in a while...from [info]earlgreytea68:

Your result for Howard Gardner's Eight Types of Intelligence Test...

Logical

41% Logical, 41% Spatial, 12% Linguistic, 10% Intrapersonal, 37% Interpersonal, 33% Musical, 24% Bodily-Kinesthetic and 29% Naturalistic!

"This area has to do with logic, abstractions, inductive and deductive reasoning, and numbers. While it is often assumed that those with this intelligence naturally excel in mathematics, chess, computer programming, and other logical or numerical activities, a more accurate definition places emphasis less on traditional mathematical ability and more reasoning capabilities, abstract pattern recognition, scientific thinking and investigation, and the ability to perform complex calculations.

Careers which suit those with this intelligence include scientists, mathematicians, engineers, doctors and economists." (Wikipedia)

You guys, I didn't know you couldn't go further back than 240 entries on your flist. Is this true, or is LJ just messing with me? I haven't checked my flist since the day after Christmas or so, and sat down today with the "no communities" filter on. I think I am caught up enough, but if something major happened between the 25th and 27th of December, let me know!

I had a good holiday break, if a little hectic at times. I had a great time with my friend J in New York City! We saw Stomp and Spamalot, both of which I highly recommend! We went to Cafe Lalo twice. Once I had the Belgian waffle with strawberries and cinnamon whipped cream (great recommendation, [info]shirou!) and the other time I had the British breakfast, which was eggs and a scone with clotted cream and jam. Both breakfasts were excellent.

My new year's resolution is to graduate, period. I've put up my yearly movie post and book post. I read about 30 books this past year, which isn't a bad number, but it's a bit lower than usual.

I'm just glad to be home and relaxing. Happy New Year everyone!

Well, I got some exciting news today! My friend's experiment is in Holland, and she needs some extra help during her beam time in February and March. Since I've been marginally involved in her advisor's research before, he's familiar with me and said I could come along and help for a couple of weeks! My advisor agreed to it this morning, so now I get to go to Holland for two weeks in March! I have to work while I'm there, but still...it's free!

Add that to the collaboration meeting in January in Columbia, South Carolina, and the April APS meeting in May (ha!) in Denver, Colorado, and I will be very well-traveled next semester!

  • Netflix! My friend referred me so I got a free month and she got a free rental. I started it last Saturday, and got my first movies on Tuesday (they were shipped Monday). Apparently there's a shipping site in Raleigh, so we get stuff really fast. I sent one movie back yesterday and they received it today and shipped out my next one, which will arrive tomorrow. Awesome. Not only that, but I really like the Watch Instantly feature. I've been watching Spooks (called MI-5 here in the US) which is a show about the British secret service. I'm used to watching stuff on my computer, so that doesn't bother me at all, and it's really good quality.

  • The Fratellis - another result of my obsession with British things right now. I've been trying out lots of British music, and these guys are the right mix of rock and folk with good lyrics and fun songs.

  • Season 5 of The Office. Last night's episode was so great, but the whole season has been awesome so far!

  • The Beekeeper's Apprentice - a book I read last weekend. It's the first in a series about Mary Russell, a young girl who becomes an apprentice to Sherlock Holmes. I can't wait to get the next book.

  • Amtrak prices and being in a place where I can take the train. Next weekend I am taking my first trip on the train. I am going to visit my sister in Fredricksburg. The roundtrip ticket was only $61 after my AAA discount, and is only about an hour longer than it would take me to drive. Considering the age of my car and how much gas would cost to drive there and back, I think it's a great deal! Plus I can just sit there and read or whatever the whole time.

  • Planning my New Year's celebration with my friends. It has become somewhat of a tradition for my two best friends and me to get together over new years. This year, we are spending New Year's Eve and New Year's day in DC, and then we are going up to NYC for the following weekend. I can't wait! Recommendations of fun things to do in both cities are welcome. We are going to try to get tickets to a taping of Conan O'Brien, and tickets to a Broadway show...maybe Spamalot.

I had The Conversation with my advisor yesterday and he thinks I can defend my thesis by December 2009!!!! As anxious as I was to know what he thought, now I'm kind of freaking out. I think it can be done, but I have a lot of work to do.

Sorry I haven't really been posting much these days. We had a bout of productivity in my group and got one paper published and one paper is being refereed. Very exciting! Then my advisor told me yesterday that he wants me to write another one for Nuclear Instruments and Methods about the mine setup. Good times.

After all the trouble I went through in the spring semester trying to balance research and the one class I was taking "for fun", I decided not to take any more classes ever. Then I was talking to my friend about trying to get into medical physics after we graduate. There was a Seminars in Medical Physics class being offered, so we signed up for it. During the gathering after the first seminar, we were advised to take as many Med Phys classes as we could if we wanted to go into the field later. So I ended up signing up to take a diagnostic imaging class. It's a very interesting class!

Medical physics is going through big changes these days. Historically, medical physics is a field made up of people who came in through other fields such as biochemistry, physics, biomedical engineering, etc. However, the field is growing and medical physics graduate programs have been sprouting up. It's a medical field, so it makes sense that they would start having certain requirements about how you are trained. So, in 2012, to get board certified (to do clinical work, that is) you have to have gone through an accredited residency, and by 2014, you have to have gone through an accredited Medical Physics graduate program. But if I decide this is something I want to do, as long as I start the certification process before 2012, I can be grandfathered in. Of course, you can do research in the field without being certified.

Anyway, as I start heading toward the last year or two of my degree (I hope!) I've been thinking more about what I want to do. I'm no longer convinced the academic life is the one for me, which is why I've been looking into other options.
